Li pips Nina for Balance Beam gold

DOHA: One of the most promising among the new generation of Chinese gymnasts, Li Qi lived up to her promise to win the women’s Balance Beam gold here at the 12th FIG ART Individual Apparatus World Cup on Saturday.
The pint-sized gymnast, who had a difficulty score of 6, emerged as the winner with 14.333 points.
Though she had finished fifth in Baku last week, the gold-winning performance here will surely boost her confidence.
“I’m excited to win the gold here. It was one of my best performances,” Li told www.dohagym.com.
The 17-year-old was much ahead of her nearest competitor and challenger Nina Derwael, who accumulated 13.633 for the silver. Marine Boyer of France finished third with 13.333 points.
“I wasn’t aiming for the gold. I did my best, but Li was outstanding with her routines,” said Derwael. “I’m not disappointed at all as Uneven Bars is my pet event. The silver was a bonus.”
