AGU Holds Successful 23rd Congress in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China
September 21, 2024 – Shanghai, China,The Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) convened its 23rd Congress in Shanghai on September 21, 2024, with delegates from 29 national federations attending. The Congress marked a significant moment for gymnastics in Asia, as important decisions were made to further the development of the sport across the continent.
The meeting began with the unanimous approval of the minutes from the previous AGU Congress, held in Doha in January 2023. Financial matters were a key point of discussion, and the Congress approved both the biennial financial plan and the audited financial statements for the last two years.
AGU events for the years 2025 and 2026 had already been allocated during a previous Executive Committee meeting, and the Congress formally acknowledged these allocations. The FIG Judges Course for 2025 was similarly approved by the Executive Committee and noted by the Congress.
A major highlight of the Congress was the decision to hold the next AGU Congress in Qatar in 2026, a proposal that was unanimously accepted by the delegates. The Congress also approved proposed modifications to the AGU Statutes, which will be distributed to all member federations once finalized.
In a significant move, the Kazakhstan Gymnastics Federation proposed a change of its zone, moving from the East Zone to the Central South Zone. This proposal was met with unanimous support. Additionally, AGU announced a new partnership with the Sports Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a collaboration that is expected to enhance the development of gymnastics in the region.
During the Congress, AGU recognized the outstanding performances of several member federations during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Special distinctions were awarded to Japan, the People’s Republic of China, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei for their remarkable achievements.
The Congress also extended its gratitude to the federations that successfully hosted the 2023 and 2024 Asian Championships, including Hong Kong, China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Singapore, and the Philippines.
