AGU President congratulates Indonesian Gymnastics Federation

Doha (Qatar), AGU Office: The Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) President Mr Abdulrahman Al Shathri congratulated the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation (Persani) on hosting its first single major international gymnastics competition in recent years following the inauguration of 15th Junior ART Gymnastics Asian Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday.

“I extend my support and best wishes to the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation. And I also hope the youngsters will use this platform to showcase their talents as it is an excellent launching pad,” said AGU President Abdulrahman Al Shathri.

The season’s first tournament on the Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) calendar is a significant one as it not only the qualifying competition for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), but also a test event for this year’s Asian Games, also to be hosted by Indonesia.

“Since the competition is a qualifying event for YOG, chances are that we’re going to witness some exciting talents from across the continent,” added Mr Abdulrahman.

The four-day championships, which will include six apparatus for MAG and four for WAG, started with the qualifiers on the opening day, with the finals on Friday and Saturday.

Traditional powerhouses China and Japan will definitely use the tournament to the hilt as they prepare to make a strong squad for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

“I also thank the Indonesian government and the country’s gymnastics federation Ilya Avianti for the unstinted support in hosting the tournament. AGU is always ready to back up its member federations for the sport’s development and we also want to make Asian gymnastics better and stronger from the organisational point of view,” he said.
