China dominate the Challenge Cup CIII in Osijek (CRO), November 4 – 6, 2011
DOHA (QAT), AGU Office November 17, 2011: The penultimate event of the 2011 Challenge Cup series concluded on Sunday in Osijek (CRO), with gymnasts from China taking home six Gold and three Silver medals.
Eleven of the 26 participating countries won at least one medal at the tournament, while hosts Croatia managed one Gold, one Silver and two Bronze medals. Tomislav Markovic (CRO) made his home country particularly proud after becoming the sole gymnast to defend his title in Osijek by winning the Men’s Floor competition. He outscored Ireland’s Kieran Behan and Kas van Weelden of the Netherlands.
Markovic’s compatriot Robert Seligman, meanwhile, was defeated by Zhang Hongtao (CHI), who took Gold on the Pommel Horse, while Saso Bertoncelj (SLO) finished third. Also on Saturday, Oleksandr Vorobyov of Ukraine tied with Liao Junlin of China for first place on Rings, while Suhail Alkurdi of Syria took the Bronze.
China’s medal haul continued on Sunday with Wang Guanyin prevailing over 2010 winner Mitja Petkovsek (SLO) and Adam Kierzkowski (POL) on Parallel Bars, while Chen Xuezhang won on the Horizontal Bar by defeating Nathan Gafuik of Canada and Marijo Moznik, who took the title for the host country last year.
Germany’s Mathias Fahrig, top qualifier on the Vault, was outscored in the Final by Igor Radivilov (UKR) but left Marek Lyszczarz of Poland in his wake.
The women’s competition started off with Israel’s Valeriia Maksiuta easily outscoring her rivals to take the Vault title. Brittany Rogers (CAN) finished second, ahead of Gabriela Janik (POL).
China’s Tan Sixin and Wu Liufang finished first and second on both Uneven Bars and Balance Beam, with Marta Pihan-Kulesza (POL) and Maksiuta taking the respective third places.
Pihan-Kulesza did take the Floor title, outscoring both Tan and Tina Erceg, who was the sole female gymnast to win a medal for the host country.
