Dipa fails to qualify as team-mates Nayak, Reddy make it to vault final
JAKARTA, Indonesia: Pranati Nayak and Aruna Budda Reddy secured berths in the women’s vault final while India’s star gymnast Dipa Karmakar was left out as only two per country is allowed in the competition.
The Tripura girl had a poor landing in the first attempt and finished last among the eight competitors with team-mates Nayak and Reddy had better scores than the Olympian.
Nayak (13.425) and Reddy (13.350) finished ahead of Karmakar, who scored 13.225.
But Karmakar, who had finished fourth at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, qualified for the balance beam final giving India a faint hope of a medal.
Karmakar returned to active participation only last month when she bagged India’s first ever gold medal at the FIG World Cup in Turkey after missing action for more than a year following a surgery to treat ACL injury.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s 43-year-old star Oksana Chusovitina also qualified for the vault. She came third in the qualifiers behind South Korea’s Yeo Seo-jeong and North Korea’s Pyon Rye Yong.
