MAG Japan Team univ-2011Doha (QAT) AGU office: August 16, 2011:The Japanese men joined their female compatriots as team champions at the 26th University Games, on Sunday August 14, 2011 in Shenzhen, China.
Japan comfortably outscored the host Chinese, 269.200 to 265.650, with the top scores of the field on both floor exercise and still rings. Shoichi Yamamoto led the Japanese, scoring 90.150, while teammate Ryuza Sejima had the third-highest score (88.850).
The Chinese had the top team totals on parallel bars and high bar, but were uncharacteristically weak on pommel horse and still rings (eighth on both). 2009 world champion Wang Guanyin earned the team’s highest score, 16.100, on parallel bars.
Romania won the bronze, 1 point behind China. European floor exercise champion Flavius Koczi vaulted to 16.550, the highest mark of the day.
2008 Olympian Nathan Gafuik led Canada to fourth place, and qualified second to Monday’s all-around final with 89.600.
Competition continues Monday with the all-around finals.
