WAG Japan Team univ-2011Doha (QAT), AGU office: The Japanese women team won the gold medal on Saturday August 13, 2011 in WAG team finalduring the 26th University Games in Shenzhen, China.
The Japanese squad of Yuma Imanishi, Yu Minobe, Keiko Mukumoto, Kyoko Oshima and Mai Yamagishi outscored Ukraine, 165.200-164.600. Russia won the bronze (162.150), while defending champion China fielded two individual gymnasts only.
Going into the last rotation, Ukraine held a comfortable margin over Japan, 124.350-121.800. But relatively weak vaulting on Ukraine’s part dropped the team behind the Japanese gymnasts, who meanwhile earned the highest uneven bars total of the day (43.400).
The Ukrainians schooled the field on balance beam with a 44.150, which included an outstanding 15.200 from former European champion Yana Demyanchuk (round-off tucked full twist; stuck double pike).
Russia took the top score on vault (tied with Korea) and floor exercise, but underwhelmed on balance beam with 39.950.
Competition continues Sunday with the men’s team and individual qualification.
