Gymnastics Federation of India conducts FIG Level 1 Artistic Coaching Course

DOHA (QAT) AGU Office: The Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) recently hosted the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) Level 1 Artistic Gymnastics Coaching Course for the very first time in their country at the Shree CA Patel Learning Institute in Mota Fofalia, Gujarat from February 17 to 24.
The course is a flagship coaching programme initiative by the FIG to aid coaches around the world with techniques and a more scientific understanding of the sport.
It was conducted under the aegis and supervision of the FIG itself and, supported by the Asian Gymnastics Union.
A total of 50 coaches in Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics attended the course, which was conducted by FIG experts and a course leader Derick Scholtz (RSA), WAG Expert Eva Szloboda (HUN) and MAG expert Kevin James (AUS).
The week-long course consisted of theory and practical exams where each coach was assigned a skill and had to prepare a small presentation about how he/she would teach the particular skill.
Experts then assessed the presentation based on the criteria set by FIG.
Multiple national level medalists, active senior and recently retired gymnasts and current coaches were a part of the course including India’s current top male gymnast Rakesh Kumar Patra and international gymnast Tumpa Debnath.
“Such courses and coaching camps should happen more often. This way the knowledge will help all the coaches to further improve the quality of gymnastics in India,” said Debnath.
