Empowering Dreams: Rhythmic Gymnast Nagham El Shorafa Becomes the First Palestinian to Compete in Asian Games

Hangzhou, China – October 6, 2023 – In a groundbreaking achievement, Palestinian-Canadian rhythmic gymnast Nagham Fady El Shorafa has made history by becoming the first Palestinian gymnast to participate in the Asian Games. Despite numerous challenges faced by the Palestinian Olympic Committee and the Palestinian Gymnastics Federation, Nagham, who holds dual Canadian and Palestinian nationality, proudly represented Palestine in the rhythmic gymnastics category at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.

Nagham El Shorafa expressed her profound gratitude and determination, saying,”I am incredibly honored and excited to represent Palestine in the 2023 Asian Games. This opportunity means the world to me, and I am determined to use it to bring attention to the incredible talent that exists in Palestine. Through my participation, I hope to pave the way for more Palestinian athletes and demonstrate that with determination and perseverance, we can achieve our dreams, regardless of the challenges we face. Together, let’s make Palestinian sports shine on the global stage.”

Born on June 1st, 2003, in Cairo, Egypt, Nagham has been a dedicated gymnast since the age of 4. Her journey in rhythmic gymnastics has taken her across international competitions, including successful performances in Turkey and Russia. Nagham’s talent and determination led her to be chosen for the Egyptian National Team in 2016, but due to her nationality, she could not continue representing Egypt. After moving to Canada in 2016, Nagham persevered, eventually earning her place in the Canadian National Team in 2019.

Her participation in the 2023 Asian Games marks a significant milestone for Palestinian gymnastics and serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes in Palestine and around the world.
